A Whole Lot More History
comes in with this week's wine. Simply because of the local "King of Grapes", maratheftiko, which grows here and there in Kolios vineyards, and is handpicked to produce this private selection wine with a specially tailored method of vinification. - Kolios boasts that "this wine reflects the strenght of the Cyprus land and sun".

Usually The Deep Roots Of History
come from local grapes, because usually they have a history going back more than just generations - at best to the very origins of wine. But, maratheftiko is an enigma to me! Even the HUGE Winegrape glossary at Robin Garr's site seems to have a blank on this one (?)

What A Wonderful Moment
to simply go and dive into a 100% maratheftiko wine!

And It Proved
to be wonderful from the moment the deep red wine was poured into the glass. The nose is extremely fine and odorous with the darkest blackcurrants staying in the air and playing with a subtle sweetness. The taste proves immediately that I've met one more of the great joys - a true grape worth a singlegrape wine. It does not jump up and down like a wild horse. It gallops with the grace and endurance of a purebred, combining the complex muscle movements to a harmonious flight over the pastures.

Big words?
I may seem to use big words, but when I have a wine experience that is totally new to me, it is always a big thing to me. And when the experience proves that I've been blessed with an enjoyment of a grape that is on par with what are usually considered the very finest, it may be pardonable to loose some modesty in choosing words.

You'll have an experience you won't regret, nor forget! And don't be as shy as we were, but buy a good number of Socrates' own traditionally made dessert wine. I promise you that you won't regret that!
