An Amazing Find To An Agiorgitiko Lover
Nemea's Very Own Agiorgitiko is a rather delicate grape. It does not yield strong, backbony wines in the New World style with a high alcohol content. So it must be processed delicately to pay respect to its characteristics as a source for a medium-bodied or light wine. I believe that with agiorgitiko even the slightest flaws in wine-making make bigger errors than with heavier grape varieties that produce wines with more alcohol combined with more tannin. With the latter you have more lee-way to come out OK. Ageing Potential with an agiorgitiko-type wine is also less interesting. It's better to have it when its still youthfully alive. So, it's not the cellaring-fan's favourite with its rather low prospect of an increase in price over the years. It is meant to be enjoyed by the mouth, not from the pocket. Food-matching agiorgitiko wines is simple. From the lighter herb-spiced cuisine (of Greece) to your free will of having a lighter wine experience with heavier spicing. Agiorgitiko is an excellent soother of the hot mouth. Agiorgitiko benefits from not being aged in oak barrels. So it retains the delicate hints of the original grape-juice that can be experienced even after fermentation. Nemeas are dry table reds, but there are differences in the slight sensation of sweetness among producers / vintages. In my experience this might be due to the differences in the moment of harvesting. The Greek sunshine can very easily make the grapes over-ripe, and if harvested just a bit too late, agiorgitiko will have raisiny characteristics because it's only delicately juicy. On Its Own a good agiorgitko wine from Nemea is a celebration on the lighter nuances. But agiorgitiko also blends excellently with harsher grapes, e.g. Cabernet, to produce modern Greek wines with a broad spectrum of taste. Then agiorgitiko serves the same purpose as merlot, but, in my opinion, with new and more interesting hues. Our Agiorgitiko 2003 represents the good characteristics of a Nemea wine. In addition it has that little speciality that Nemeas may have. There is a slight hint of toffee in the fore-taste. It's not a candy-taste, but a fleeting moment before the wine starts... But The Real Surprise with this Agiorgitiko 2003 comes from the price-tag. 1,78 EUR per bottle! I don't know if it was a special offer, but I can assure you that our previous encounter with a wine with a top P/Q-ratio is now knocked out of the game.
