Enjoying Wine
in its most meaningful way is a context-sensitive affair. A wine experienced in a wine-tasting, however excellent and praised it might be then, is only like a gold coin that is tested by biting it to ascertain its value. When You Know what a good wine is to your taste, you have these real ways of enjoying wine, not the gold coin: -A Dionysian celebration of intoxication with wine and food. -A quiet moment alone, or in a company speaking softly and responsively, to muse upon this world over a glass (or glasses) of wine - with or without food. -A moment, an hour, or an eternity, with the dearest person in your life - the one you share a glass of wine with hopes of doing it over and over again. Then the wine (and the food) begins to be significant. My Wife is the one responsible for my love for Domaine Carras wines, or just for the plain knowledge of there being such a fine producer of wines. Without her I would not have visited Thassos, and the restaurant with the last bottle of Carras from their deep-down cellar. I would not remember the wine without having fallen in love with her. I would not remember the Carras, brought to us from the deep cellar, in the way I still do, if she hadn't been there to share it. - And we still have that bottle (now empty ofcourse) back at home where we use it as a candlestick. This LIMNIO 1997 we found in Chania after leaving a restaurant with out bellies enjoyably full with one more study in lambchoppology. Though our Limnio has now reached the venerable age of 9 years, it still has quite a few years to reach our time together. But something can be interpreted to be similar, since usually wines age faster than humans. In the wine there is that red colour leaning now towards brown, the softness of taste still retaining the essence of the grape, and the round, tasty feel of the wine. - In the above, to depict us humans, you need only to replace the brown with gray;-) -Hannu December 6, 2006 It's Nikos' nameday, and congratulations to you Finland, too!
